Understanding Versos: When to Flip a Painting Over

The back of a painting is rarely viewed in art historical or exhibition settings. Access to such information is often considered an industry secret. However, the information held on the backs of paintings, or versos, can be vital to truly understanding an art object's history.

In her upcoming virtual talk, Aubrey Catrone will lead a presentation on the history of versos and how the information recorded on the back of a painting can influence due diligence, authentication, and appraisal procedures.

About Aubrey Catrone of Proper Provenance LLC:

Aubrey Catrone is an international art historian, appraiser, and provenance researcher. Aubrey earned an MA in History of Art from University College London, specializing in versos and the documented histories of art objects.

With an art gallery and academic research background, Catrone founded Proper Provenance, LLC to provide her clients with the tools, not only to historically contextualize art, but also to shed light on attribution and legal title within the international art market. Catrone has researched artworks including paintings, artefacts, works on paper, prints, and sculptures spanning the fourth century B.C. to the twenty-first century A.D. Her volunteerism has included myriad projects with the Association for Research into Crimes Against Art (ARCA), the Cultural Plunder by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg: Jeu de Paume Database, and the International Foundation for Art Research (IFAR).
